Physical Description

Six story, 48 apartment building on a corner parcel. Exterior was medina sandstone and reddish-brown brick. Ornamentation was terra-cotta with balconies of ornamental iron.

Current Condition

Demolished. Site used for surface parking and a one story NFTA subway station

History

  • 1896 - Hotel Markeen constructed
  • 1900 - The original design was altered by Esenwein & Johnson for use as a Pan-American hotel
  • 1902 - Sold in foreclosure despite its success
  • 1927 - Deceased owner Randolph McNutt left the hotel to Dartmouth College. The college sold the hotel to George and Christian Muegel
  • 1937 - The Muegel's defaulted on their mortgage and sold to William J. Thomas, who remodeled and modernized it
  • 1959 - The Markeen was sold to Morrison Hotels for $500,000, then sold again in less than a year.
  • 1963 - Leased to Sixty-Five House, Inc. for use as senior citizen housing. That organization filed for bankruptcy the same year and the building became vacant.
  • 1966 - Furnishings were auctioned off and it was demolished for a gas station
  • 1980s - Gas station replaced by subway station
