Physical Description

Three-story, 27,000 sq.ft. Classical Revival building. Built to be fireproof, it originally held three bowling alleys, a swimming pool, a library, a large auditorium, a billiard/card room, a gymnasium, hot/cold showers, a symmetrical façade, gable roof, and pilaster-supported pediment. Current Condition

As of 2012, second floor space was still being used by Belmont Contracting. The owner, Bruce Baird, says repairs to the roof and terra-cotta exterior will soon be required, but the interior is dry.

History

  • 1844 - St. Mary’s founded when Broadway was still "Batavia Street"
  • 1909 - The Lyceum was constructed by the Most Holy Redeemer society, founders of St. Mary’s.
  • 1930s - Became classroom space for St. Mary’s Business School
  • 1970 - Became a health/social services center and office space
  • 1986 - St. Mary's Church fire
  • 1991 - Lyceum purchased by Belmont Contracting
