History

  • 1925 - Founded by Maurice Houdaille (pronounced Hoo-Die), inventor of the double-action rotary shock absorber.
  • Company went on to manufacture shock absorbers, auto parts, machine tools, and other steel products.
  • 1977 - Houdaille company moved to Ft. Lauderdale
  • Used by Vibratech until the early 1990s

  • aprox. 2008 - Site was to be cleaned as a EPA superfund site
  • 2013 - City hopes to obtain a Brownfield Opportunity Area designation for the East Delavan-Grider area
  • August 2014 - 'A city-affiliated development agency, the Buffalo Urban Development Corp, agreed Tuesday to purchase 11 acres for $250,000, so it can be cleaned up and sold to another developer. Board members hinted that there is an interested buyer. Mayor Brown said he would seek funding from the state’s Buffalo Billion initiative to help make it attractive to developers.' The Buffalo News
  • December 30, 2014 - 'The Buffalo Urban Development Corporation (BUDC) has finalized the purchase of a key East Delevan Avenue property, the first of a dozen planned for the area. Last fall, Governor Cuomo announced $6.7 million in funding from the Buffalo Billion to acquire 50 acres of industrial properties in the Northland-Beltline Industrial Corridor to create a business park focused on the manufacturing and energy sectors. On December 30, BUDC purchased 537 East Delevan Avenue from Salvage Properties Trust for $250,000. The 10.5 acre parcel has over 300,000 sq.ft. of space that was constructed between 1927 and 1944. The BUDC will be working with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to investigate and remediate the property.' Buffalo Rising
  • January 4, 2017 - "The Buffalo Urban Development Corp., which has been coordinating the project, is expected to select a demolition contractor for Houdaille Industries building at 537 E. Delavan, a 10.5-acre parcel with 300,000 square feet of space, built between 1927 and 1944. The property will be cleaned up under the state Superfund program, and about two-thirds of the building space, including the site's main structure, will be demolished, said Peter Cammarata, the development agency's president."
