10-story Italian Renaissance Revival style office building with terra-cotta exterior

Current Condition

Restored and in use as a commercial building. Missing its cornice.

History

  • Construction began in 1895 by D.H. Burnam & Co. and was completed in 1896, taking only a year to build
  • Cost of $3.5 million dollars in 1896

Recent Events and Actions Taken

  • The terracotta cornice was removed in 1971. No attempt has been made to restore it since.

Other Pertinent Facts

  • It was the largest office building in the world for more than a decade at the time of its construction
  • In 1896 it contained the earliest known dedicated motion picture theater in the world
  • Part of the Joseph Ellicott Historic Preservation District
