Current Condition
The Lafayette was demolished in 1962 and the office building in 1967, leaving nothing but a surface parking lot for half a century.
History
- 1825 - Federal Style house built by Jonas Harrison
- 1830-1851 - Home of Sheldon Thompson, the first popularly elected mayor of Buffalo in 1840. Daily Public
- 1865 - House demolished
- 1922 - Lafayette Theater opened to replace an earlier theater of the same name nearby, the Lafayette Square Playhouse was designed by architect Leon H. Lempert for theater and vaudeville. It could seat over 3000. The Lafayette was acclaimed for its superb acoustics and had a large stage.
- Mike Puma: "You can thank Benderson Development for that lot. They bought it in 1962 and promptly demolished the auditorium portion for parking to support the office tower, which was demolished in 1967."
