  • Wood frame barn.

Current Condition

  • Boarded and vacant.

History

  • Designed by Calvert Vaux and built (1876-1877) when the park system was created by Olmsted and Vaux.
  • The last remaining building in the park system designed by Calvert Vaux; the only Calvert Vaux building in Buffalo.
  • Moved from the park to private land in 1897.

Recent Events and Actions Taken

  • April 2025 - The Vaux Barn was declared a local landmark.
  • 2025 (?) - The current owner put a new roof on the building.
  • The Olmsted Parks Conservancy would like to acquire and move the barn back to the park where it was originally sited (Martin Luther King Jr.), where it will be a working building, part of the greenhouse complex.
  • Cost to purchase, move, renovate and restore other portions of the barn is as much as $500,000.
  • Money is very tight for the Conservancy at this time, so support and leadership from an independent group is the likeliest short-term approach.
